Although in one of the first posts of this blog we generically explained what a netbook is we are constantly getting direct messages on twitter from our readers regarding some differences between notebooks, netbooks, laptops, etc…Therefore, in this post we are going to clraify some of the basic differences between those three elements of the new computerized world we live in.
If only for a brief moment someone stops being up to date with the evolvements of technology it is enough for this peson to get completely aside. Trust me when i say this, completely is not an exageration. Three months is more than enough for hundreds of new improvements to be created and implemented and clearly enough to leave a “laic” to be swallowed by this constantly mutant world.
So, getting to the point…you may find yourself listening to advertisements of netbooks quite often theses days. But what are those, again? Are they somehow related to those “familiar” notebooks we hear about? But wait! Weren’t those laptops afterall? I guess what has to be taken into consideration here is the fact that each and every term has a place of origin. If consulted any technology enhtusiast will be albe to provide you with the place, time and the company that came up with that name in the first place. Basically speaking some major companies around the world are seeing marketing oportunities and therefore creating terms, names, brands that were designed to sell new lines of products.
And now you turn to us and ask: so, basically, you are saying that netbooks are actually notebooks, which, in their own way, are laptops? That`s pretty easy! Why did you waste so much time to get to that?! Wait a second! That is not what I said, it is much more complicated than that, trust me.
Although being terms of marketing and branding those three actually have significant differences between each other and correspond as differnt lines in the portable PC industry. Each line has its own public to target, its own capacities in terms of performance and its own purpose in the market. In a quest to get yourself a portable PC or Mac or Linux it is vital ot analize each option in the market.
To make this a bit easier to follow let`s think of a family formed by the mother and the two children, one college student and a 16 year-old. The 16 year-old who does schoolwork, surfs the web and plays a few games online will most likely be suited with a laptop. His brother, on the other hand, who takes it to college with him and who constantly uses it for video editing programs, photo editing softwares, as well as heavy gaming will definately need a notebook with him. Their mother whose computer life can be summed up into e-mail checking and some light web surfing will probably be satisfied with a netbook though (and the Netbook Acer One is the one of the best).
In short terms we can start to divide the three somewhat like this: Although firstly attached to the laptops, now the notebooks can be considered the portable desktops (the ones that stand on the ground or on your “desk” as the name points out). The Laptops became some sort of light-weight notebooks for smaller tasks. And finally the Netbooks are “plume-weights” whose main task is to surf the web and that present very low prices in a very small size.
All of this means that when you decide to get yourself a portable PC first write down what are you possibly gonna you use it for. The list should contain everything you plan on doing with the machine. After that if you decide that all you are going to do is surfing the web and e-mail checking then I’d recommend a Netbook. In this case a laptop may be too much since it can perform more than just web surfing and it`s price tells you that if compared to the netbook`s. If there are a few more applications that you are considering to use in your portable pc than it might be a good idea to get yourself a laptop instead. They are more potent and have better performance. Now, if you work with pcs, surf the web, play games, use heavy softwares and needs to take it with you at all times then you most certainly need a notebook.
Naturally what was left to say is that inside all three of those categories there are (of course) several major and small differences between the models and their specs. But that is for another post…
