Lost Saga- Fighting Game Of Historical Figures, Heroes & Villains

play fighting games onlineWhat’s the common denominator for pirates, assassins, fire mages, space troopers, vikings and comic book heroes? At first glance, not much. But all of these characters have served a significance in their own way. These are all historical figures, heroes so to say, albeit some of them imaginary.

Now, as imaginary fights go, these guys sound like an incredible match. How would your ninja hold out against my magician? (continue reading…)

All you need to know about multiboxing

Xzin, certainly World of Warcraft’s master of multiboxing and the only one we know of to have reached Warlord rank in PvP with five characters, has been working on a resource to answer all of the questions he receives about mutliboxing and his own setup. It’s an excellent getting started guide, but before you get reading, you need to be aware that it’s a pricey proposition. If you’re wanting to upgrade your current setup to a 5-box configuration, here’s what you should plan to spend, according to Xzin:

  • $2000: Four more desktop computers.
  • $600: Four LCD monitors. Thank goodness they’re cheap these days.
  • $250: Monitor mounts, to get all of your new LCDs in a position where they’re easily visible without needing to swing your head around.
  • $400: Keyboard multicaster(s), which will send the output of one keyboard to multiple computers.
  • $120: KVM, that allows you to swap which computer your keyboard and mouse are sending commands to. (You can get cheaper KVMs these days, but the one Zxin recommends is high quality.)
  • $60: Y-mouse. Allows you to plug multiple keyboards/mice into a single machine.
  • $120: X-keys. Programmable keyboard hotkeys.
  • $400: Keyboard(s).
  • $80: Mice.
  • $200: Four copies of the game and expansion.

This gives you a total of $4280 in expenses before you consider the cost of monthly subscriptions, increased electricity costs, etc… But if multiboxing is something you’re interested in trying out, this is the guide to help you get started.

iPhone vs. iPad: 20 games compared

The iPad is many things to many people, but the area where it stands to make the most change is in mobile gaming.

Until now, gamers have been left with two very different options for mobile gaming. One is user portables like the Sony PlayStation Portable and the Nintendo DS. The other is to lug around a beefy laptop for games, which can work just fine but be a burden on your body and nomadic lifestyle.

The same way the iPhone shook things up for the world of mobile phones, the iPad could end up doing the same for portable gaming. Its big touch screen and cellular data connectivity (at least on the 3G models) will no doubt help in launching new and popular franchises. There’s even a patent filing from 2008 that could bring docking hardware that would add real tactile buttons and an analog joystick.

Until that day arrives, there are a handful of games at launch that are simply iterations of existing iPhone games. We’ve rounded up 20 that can be found on both platforms. Then we stuck them side by side so you can see the differences.

The two huge caveats with this slideshow are that:
1) Our photo viewer does not currently let you see full-size, pixel-for-pixel screenshots
2) We didn’t start out with those anyway–at least for the iPad.

All the shots you see (with a few exceptions) are the ones provided by the developer, and found in the App Store. With that warning aside, click on the slideshow link below to see the differences.

Twenty-five great games you can play on a Netbook – Part IV

Bejeweled Twist

Bejeweled Twist

The ubiquitous match-three series of games is on every device and platform from iPhones to Facebook. The easy to get Web-based version is also available to download.

Bloons Tower Defense

Bloons Tower Defense

Crazy monkeys and balloon-popping — what more could you ask for in a tower defense game? There are a ton of these games available online, but this Web-based one is an off-kilter favorite.

Grand Theft Auto 2

Grand Theft Auto 2

Rockstar Games has made some of its classic titles available as free downloads, including the excellent GTA 2, which is played from a top-down view, but will be surprisingly familiar to modern GTA fans.

PetVille

PetVille

The latest social-network gaming hit is basically little more than a social virtual pet, but it’s worth playing just for the insane theme song–you’ll be humming it all day.

Duke Nukem 3D

Duke Nukem 3D

An early 3D classic that still provides tons of great one-liners and pop culture in-jokes. Sure, your Netbook can run even new shooters, but this is a great excuse to go back and relive this classic.

Twenty-five great games you can play on a Netbook – Part III

FarmVille

FarmVille

With more than 70 million active players, this might be the biggest online game of all time, and it has helped legitimize Facebook as a gaming platform

Gothic II

Gothic II

No matter how much you tweak the settings, the current hot epic RPG, Dragon Age, isn’t going to run on a Netbook. However, Gothic II is a well-remembered open-world sword-and-sorcery RPG that will (if you turn everything all the graphics settings to low)

Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast

Jedi Knight II: Jedi Outcast

A completely kick-ass first-person shooter that makes up for the dozens of poor Star Wars games released over the years

Mafia Wars

Mafia Wars

While also available on MySpace and the iPhone, the Facebook version of Mafia Wars is where it’s at. It’s a simple turn-based text RPG, but a surprising hit for a sub-genre that was thought to have died out in the era of MUDs.

Sanitarium

Sanitarium

A great classic 1998 point-and-click adventure, Sanitarium was recently re-released as a $9.99 DRM-free download from Good Old Games.

Nancy Drew series

Nancy Drew series

This long-running PC game series has managed to stay popular, despite not making many changes to its graphics or interface over the past decade. In fact, these games are expressly designed to appeal to non-gamers, by running on almost any hardware

Beneath a Steel Sky

Beneath a Steel Sky

An excellent mid-’90s point-and-click adventure. While the graphics may look primitive by today’s standards, it’s available as a free download from Good Old Games.

Braid

Braid

This indie-game favorite is available for PCs and also for the Xbox 360. Besides being a new game, as opposed to a re-released classic, it’s also an interesting, dark take on the classic platform game genre.

Twenty-five great games you can play on a Netbook – Part II

Torchlight

Torchlight

Cool Diablo-style action RPG that scales well for low-end machines. It even has a “Netbook Mode” check box in the settings menu (but too many enemies on screen at once can cause slowdown if you don’t have an Ion Netbook)

7

Plants vs. Zombies

Plants vs. Zombies

An addictive take on the tower defense genre–easily one of the most fun casual games ever

8

World of Warcraft

World of Warcraft

The world’s most popular MMO isn’t exactly a natural fit for Netbooks, but it does run if all the graphics settings are turned down.

9

Quake Live

Quake Live

Years ago, hardly a day would go by without enterprising office drones jumping into an intra-office Quake III match in the middle of the day. This free, browser-based version of the game is an amazing simulation, and works on nearly any PC. Play it online at QuakeLive.com.

10

Alien Shooter 2/Zombie Shooter 2

Alien Shooter 2/Zombie Shooter 2

Part of a line of new 2D, top-down (isometric, actually) action RPGs, these blood-soaked games are great fun, and easy to play even on low-power machines.

11

Fallout/Fallout 2

Fallout/Fallout 2

Sure, Fallout 3 is one of the best open-world RPGs we’ve ever played, but the original 2D Fallout games were also great, and known for their sly humor and engaging characters (even if the control interface seems needlessly clunky today)

Twenty-five great games you can play on a Netbook – Part I

Game – 1
The Gabriel Knight series is an adventure classic, and a great match for Netbooks.

(Credit: Activision)

Since we put together our first Netbook-friendly PC game list, we’ve gotten many excellent suggestions from readers for new additions. We’ve also finally seen some long-awaited new entries from the classic Sierra/Activision library come to the popular GOG.com retro gaming Web site (including one of our long-time faves, Gabriel Knight), which gives us even more to choose from.

The new 2010 crop of Netbooks sadly don’t offer much in the way for performance improvements. Instead, systems with the latest Intel Atom N450 CPU have made big gains in battery life. That’s always a plus, but it also means our standard admonitions about not expecting too much from your Netbook in terms of performance remain in effect. That said, this collection (which includes links to download or play the games themselves) should help make your Netbook a pretty decent mobile gaming machine.

Game-2

Arcanum

Arcanum

A steampunk RPG from 2001, Arcanum is a cult favorite, thanks to its gigantic open-ended world. Like many of the classic games here, it looks a bit dated by today’s standards, but it perfectly suited for low-power Netbook gaming

Game-3

Aliens versus Predator Classic 2000

Aliens versus Predator Classic 2000

Sega has a new AvP game about to hit store shelves, but it’s tough to beat the original creepy classic from a decade ago. Play as a human, an alien, and as a Predator in this new version that’s been tweaked to run on modern PCs. The original’s multiplayer mode is currently missing, but on the plus side

Game – 4

Half-Life

Half-Life

Another PC gaming classic made available via the Steam online service for only $9.99. Easily one of the best first-person shooters of all time, and hugely influential. Runs great on a Netbook, and you’ll never look at crowbars the same way again.

Game-5

Crash the Castle

Crash the Castle

Browser-based games are always good for Netbook players on the go. Finding a good one in this very crowded field is always tough, but we’ve been enjoying the heck out of this free physics-based game, where you use a catapult to knock down increasingly complex castles. Also available as an iPhone app.
